THE EPIDERMIS: KERATInOCyTES, CORnEOCyTES, AnD DESQuAMATIOn The keratinocyte is the main type of cell in the epidermis. Each individual keratinocyte begins its life in the stratum basale (also called the stratum germinativum), the lowest of the five layers of the epidermis, then migrates up through the other layers, changing into a corneocyte, and finally desquamating from the surface of the skin 40���56 days after it began its journey. By the time it has become a corneocyte in the stratum corneum, the cell is scalelike and stacks up with the other corneocytes like shingles on a roof. Keratinocytes are preprogrammed from the beginning of their life to die and desquamate, flaking off the skin to make way for new cells.
