Which Services Are Most Profitable? Based on the authors own experience, this table shows typical profits based on 1 pound of mid- to high-quality wax at $19, and waxing sticks at the prices mentioned in the list on page 13. Use this as a template to determine your own profits with your specific products and client pricing. With so many brands and choices out there, its easy to get confused, so determine first how much you have to spend and stay within that budget. When considering your budget, calculate how long it will take to make this money back based on typical costs of waxing services (see the box on the left). This is where it really becomes obvious how profitable waxing can be: you will recoup your start-up costs after just 1520 Brazilian waxes. Invest in Safety First As noted in the start-up cost list, I do not recommend skimping on insurance, training, or the wax itself. These are most important for the safety of your clients, the future of your business, and your long-term profitability. Liability insurance is already included as one of your membership benefits if you are a member of Associated Skin Care Professionals. If you have other liability insurance, make sure it has adequate coverage for your intended waxing services. Insurance companies receive more injury claims related to waxing than any other skin care service. No matter how experienced you are, waxing has numerous contraindications and brings the daily risk that you might injure a client. (See page 18 in this issue for some tips on reducing that risk.) Specialized training is another necessity if you intend to offer waxing services. Schools typically dont teach more than the basics of waxing, instead expecting graduates to gain more experience when they enter the workforce. But unless you are lucky enough to work with an expert waxer, experience can end up meaning you just spend more time doing something inefficiently. Bad habits and inefficient practices will cost you money in the long run. Get connected to your peers @ www.skincareprofessionals.com 15
