The savvy skin care professional may even opt to use separate forms for men and women but modify them to include the questions on page 62. Being gender sensitive is not for SGM guests only—it's for all guests, as most men do not feel comfortable with questions regarding pregnancy, menopause, or menstruation. Tailoring your forms to become more gender inclusive is simply good business. Consultation can then proceed to obtain specific information regarding skin care concerns and requested services. The AAD position paper noted that skin cancer rates among gay men may be higher due to a prevalence of indoor tanning. While skin cancer screening is a significant component of assessment for all guests, it is especially important for this group. With health- challenged individuals—especially those with HIV—wearing gloves during all skin care services is recommended. Acne concerns can become an issue for those undergoing hormonal affirmation therapy and may be further impacted by the use of makeup or skin care products that are inappropriate for the guest's individual needs. Acne may have special impact on the SGM community, as the relationship between self-esteem, acne, and gender identity is an important one. If you opt to carry gender- specific or gender-neutral products, training is important to understand the proper use of the products with this group.
