Are Diversity
and Inclusion
the Same Thing?
Ask most people about the differences between
diversity and inclusion, and many will be hard-
pressed to make the necessary distinction. Many
people think diversity and inclusion are the same,
but they're not.
Diversity is an empty term, similar to checking off
a list of boxes to meet quotas. Sure, you're filling
all the boxes and meeting your quotas, but there's
no cohesion. Inclusion, on the other hand, speaks
to equality, where everyone is considered, treated
well, and has equal value.
As an example, your marketing and business
environment can be very diverse—think individual
puzzle pieces that represent people of all races,
ages, body types, and gender identification—but,
without total acceptance (inclusion), even the most
diverse group of individuals can feel isolated, lied
to, unheard, silenced, tokenized, or otherwise
unwelcome. Without inclusion, the puzzle pieces
don't fit together.
