ascp now offers advanced modality insurance! ascpskincare.com/ami 79 The esthetician can add a short (10–20 minute) lymphatic drainage massage to an existing facial treatment or off er a longer session when the client wants to look their best for a special occasion. But since the procedure is so gentle and soothing that some clients drift off to sleep during it, this "nap with added benefi ts" can also be marketed like any other relaxation treatment. THE TECHNIQUE The basic technique of lymphatic drainage massage is diff erent from other massages, most of which require strong pressure in order to reach deep muscle tissue. Lymph massage uses a circular technique that is more of a gentle nudge; the purpose is to help the body help itself by guiding fl uids toward the lymph nodes. This is done by applying light but steady pressure to the skin, then manipulating a square- inch patch of that skin by moving the fi ngertips in a circular motion. Think of the area of skin as a piece of paper resting on a table; to move the paper in a circle with your fi nger would only require a light but constant touch. Use both hands to massage both sides of the body at once, starting your circle movement close to the node, then traveling away from it, then returning to the node as you complete the circle. Also, since your goal is to move fl uid toward the lymph nodes, use slightly more pressure when massaging toward the nodes and slightly less pressure as your circular motion moves away from them. This treatment requires no lubricant, but if desired, a very light application of either squalene or jojoba oil is all that's needed. The Neck Massage The lymph facial massage begins just above the collarbone. Start with your fi ngers an inch higher than the bone Six more ways to improve lymph system function 1. Reduce stress with some gentle stretching, deep- breathing exercises, yoga, or Pilates. 2. Perform low-impact rebounding exercises to stimulate lymph fl uid as the body moves against gravity. 3. Wear loose-fi tting clothes, as the lymph system has no pumping component and tight-fi tting clothes can stagnate the fl ow and drainage of lymph fl uid. 4. Be sure to hydrate properly; the lymph system is composed mainly of water and needs plenty of it to function eff ectively. 5. Eat an anti-infl ammatory diet rich in antioxidants and "good fats," which are essential for supporting a healthy lymph system; red foods such as cherries, raspberries, cranberries, and beets are prime choices. 6. Dry brush the skin. Because the lymph system is so close to the surface, dry brushing the skin can help stimulate normal lymph fl ow. Use a brush with fi rm, natural bristles, and always brush in the direction of the heart. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
