Decreases water content and increases protein density, also known as tightening and firming tissue. 3. Causes vasoconstriction of the blood vessels. 4. Soothes nerve endings, decreases sensitivity. 5. Astringent and germicidal action. 6. Contracts pores. These effects are called anaphoresis. of this is possible because the body's fluids contain ions. For a quick reference, check out the fact box at right. Note: There are claims that fat can be removed with a galvanic body treatment—these have not been scientifically proven. HOW TO PERFORM THE PROCEDURE You will need the body electrodes that are sold for your galvanic current machine. If your manufacturer does not make these, you will need a body-specific device or another galvanic device that is multifunctional. A sensitivity test must be done by taking a metal implement or stick and scraping it across the skin to determine whether the client can feel sensation. The client should feel a mild tingling, but it should not be irritating. Place the client in a prone position on the treatment table. 1. Cleanse the area to be treated with a pH-balanced cleanser; dry the skin. 2. Apply an active, water-based ingredient conductor, usually a cellulite gel. 3. Place the wet, active electrode on the area to be treated and the wet, inactive electrode on the opposite side. Strap firmly to the skin. 4. Switch the polarity to negative, turn the device on, and slowly increase the strength until the client feels a tingling sensation. Do not exceed 3 mA. Leave on for 10 minutes for the first visit, up to 20 minutes for subsequent visits. The client can be wrapped in a warm blanket for further comfort. Do not leave the client unattended. 5. Slowly turn the device off, remove the electrodes, and apply a warm towel to cleanse the area. 6. Apply a soothing serum or cream to the areas treated. The skin will show a slight erythema. CONTRAINDICATIONS Standard precautions for electrotherapy treatments apply: no pregnancy, broken skin, pacemakers or other metal in the body, bruising or swelling in the area to be treated, uncontrolled blood pressure issues, or unidentified skin disorders. With some additional training and a good galvanic device, this treatment can be a quick and valuable addition to a body treatment menu, including postcosmetic medical services. Negatively charged electrode (cathode) Alkali reaction occurs, producing the following effects: 1. Changes skin's pH into an alkaline state (> 7.4), which reduces proteins, also known as skin softening. 2. Increases microcirculation and lymph movement. 3. Stimulates nerve endings. 4. Emulsifies oil within the follicle. 5. Dilates pores. These effects are called cataphoresis.
