ascp and you: your turn Ideas From Our Members This issue's question: What's your experience with tipping? How do you feel about it, and how do you deal with it in your practice? It probably averages 12 percent. Several don't tip at all, especially on gift certificates. I sometimes get asked, since it's my business, should they tip? (I rent space in a salon.) I say it is customary if they are happy with the service. When they ask how much, I say 15 to 20 percent and up. When I worked out of my home, when asked, I smiled and said it was fine if they wanted to, but I'd much rather have them refer their friends and family. DEBORAH KENNEY HELOTES, TEXAS I placed small gratuity envelopes in cute business card holders in each of my treatment rooms. It's paying off! My gals are getting tips like crazy in these little envelopes. People have been pretty generous with tipping but it seems to have gotten even better since I placed the envelopes in the rooms. Everyone is putting the money in the envelope and either leaving it on the treatment bed or handing it to them directly. It's an unobtrusive way to remind clients. I highly recommend giving this a try! SHELLEY HANCOCK I worked as an independent, renting space in a boutique salon. Even though I owned that portion of the business, most of my clients would still tip at least 20 percent. It was an affluent clientele and I was lucky enough to have several clients who would regularly tip 100 percent of the service price! That is pretty rare, however, and I was fortunate. As a business owner, I wouldn't expect tips, and many clients feel that it's not necessary to tip an owner. If you get a tip, you should be that much more excited, and feel good that you're doing an awesome job. We should always strive to do our very best, regardless of whether we get tipped or not. At the other spa I worked at, it was 10 to 20 percent, but the spa didn't allow us to receive credit card tips. So it kind of just became whatever anyone had in their pockets, unless they knew about the policy in advance. LAUREN SNOW DENVER, COLORADO I use plain coin envelopes from Staples. Clients like using envelopes. Some people don't know what to do—this gives them a clue, plus they can keep the amount more private. I leave a pen by the envelopes, too. My clients write me little notes on them. We never suggest a percentage to clients. I typically get 10 to 20 percent, with a few above that. The nontippers have increased dramatically during these economic times, but the majority still like to say a thank-you in this generous way. CINDY GREENWOOD PERKASIE, PENNSYLVANIA Q: Q&A
