editor's note The Happiness Machine If there was a machine that could instantly lift your mood, make you feel great about yourself, improve your looks and health, and even make you live longer—all at the touch of a button—wouldn't you love to own one? You would probably go to any lengths to add it to your treatment room. You'd be excited to share it with your friends, and clients would line up at your door every day. Best of all, every time you use it on a client, this wonderful machine zaps you, too! It has no adverse side effects, no contraindications, and even improves the results of every other treatment you provide. The real happiness machine, of course, is the very opposite of a machine: it's the power of caring touch. Study after study has shown its amazing effect, and even if your own practice takes a clinical, no-frills approach to skin care, it's impossible to ignore the human factor. So why do many people value and promote it far less than they would if the same results came in a shiny box with lights and buttons on the side? Susanne Schmaling's column in this issue (see page 34) makes What charges your batteries? Pass that energy along to your clients! the very important point that the value of professional skin care is not in the products or the equipment. The value you bring to your clients is in your education, experience, knowledge, skills, talents, and that unquantifiable extra—the human touch. This fact is so obvious to estheticians that sometimes we forget it isn't obvious to the general public. Sometimes, even regular skin care clients are not aware this is what really gives them the results they wanted. The products and equipment may be all they see. Constantly working to present yourself as a highly trained source of knowledge is vital to securing your future in this profession. Author G.K. Chesterton wrote that "the test of all happiness More client forms have been added! Log in as a member at www.ascpskincare. com to download new consent and treatment forms for eyelash extensions, LED therapy, and microcurrent. is gratitude." Gratitude is an emotion we can only direct toward a person, not a thing. Even when a client is grateful for the product used, at heart, he or she is grateful to you. As Thanksgiving approaches and offers us a time to reflect on happiness and gratitude, I'd like to thank you for being a member of Associated Skin Care Professionals (ASCP). I've had some fun jobs, but this is one of the happiest workplaces I've experienced so far. Much of that comes from daily interactions with the community we serve—estheticians and other spa, salon, and wellness professionals. ASCP members are wonderful people, and working to help you succeed adds an extra zap of happiness to my day.
