Start with a basic skin type cleanser, using a facial massage to relax as well as emulsify any makeup. 2. Cleanse again with a skin-type-specifi c cleanser. 3. Apply round cotton eye pads, or use manufacturer- recommended eye protection. 4. Apply a light enzyme mask with steam for 10 minutes and then remove. 5. Apply an appropriate skin-type serum as recommended by your LED manufacturer (some have light-activated products). 6. Place the device panel within 1 inch of the face, using the protocol recommended by the manufacturer. Programs, distance, and time all vary per skin condition and device used. General guidelines are as follows: minimum time should be 15 minutes, with best results at 30 minutes. If using a handheld device, a minimum of 5 minutes per zone is generally recommended. 7. Apply serum, if not applied before; vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and growth factors are great choices. 8. Apply moisturizer and sunscreen. A PROFITABLE ADDITION Clients can expect to see minor improvements with one treatment, but for optimal results, a series of cumulative treatments 2–3 times a week over the course of 6–8 weeks is ideal. This service can be an excellent choice as an add-on while your clients are already in for regular services such as facials, waxing, microdermabrasion, etc., and can also serve as an additional revenue stream if you have an extra room in your spa where clients can come in and use it in a "self-service" way. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW • Keep the LED device close to the skin. • Use caution when treating melasma; an LED device that generates a small amount of heat can be a trigger for melasma in some clients. Using a pigment- suppressing agent such as kojic acid may help. • LED therapy is very safe. The cautionary measure would be to ensure the client's eyes are covered when applying the light. If your clients are looking for a minimally invasive treatment that allows them to relax while receiving it, consider the benefi ts of LED therapy and how it might fi t into your business. This easy-to-perform treatment has minimal risk and off ers a unique experience for your clientele. Standard LED contraindications Blue light kills p. acne bacteria, while red and infrared light can reduce inflammation, promote circulation and collagen synthesis, and accelerate healing. • Epilepsy • Pregnancy • Skin cancer • Skin disorders or diseases • Use of photosensitizing drugs
