www.ascpskincare.com 45 Skin Blends Q: How did you get into the world of professional skin care? A: As soon as I started babysitting in 5th grade, I was able to buy skin care products from an Avon lady who came to my house to see me—not my mom. Twenty-three years ago, I was working in Northern California when a coworker and I decided to go to beauty school at night. The problem was, the esthetics program was only off ered during the day; so, I quit my federal law enforcement job and went to beauty school. My coworker stayed with the feds and is now enjoying early retirement. It is a good thing I love what I do because paid holidays, retirement, and benefi ts are rare in our industry. Also, I do not believe I would still be in the industry if it wasn't for the wonderful training I received at the American Institute of Esthetics. Q: What was your inspiration to start Skin Blends? A: In 1999, there were few product lines that included fragrance-free products. Having sensitive skin myself, I wanted to create the highest quality, most natural line of results-oriented skin care products for estheticians to blend for their clients. I still feel that custom-blending home care products for clients is the best way for estheticians to really set themselves apart and ensure customer loyalty. Would you rather eat a pre-made sandwich that has been sitting on the shelf, or have one freshly prepared and customized for you? Q: What do you love about teaching? A: Teaching is natural for me. I taught swim lessons growing up. I taught high school home economics back in the '80s. I currently teach at my church and at the Skin Blends' Advanced Skin Care Training Academy. I love to make learning fun. I love helping others and being appreciated. I love the challenge of breaking down complicated ideas and techniques, and presenting them in such a way that the student easily grasps them. FOLLOW THE LEADERS ascp skin deep special advertising section "I strive for excellence in every phase of business, from products and training to staffing and customer service." sponsored by Q: Skin Blends has been in existence for 18 years. To what do you owe your success? A: Good, old-fashioned determination and hard work (and a lot of praying)! I strive for excellence in every phase of business, from products and training to staffi ng and customer service. We stay current with formulations, advertising, training, and social media. Q: What are a few qualities of great leadership? A: I think the fi rst quality is choosing the right followers and keeping them engaged. Other important qualities include being good at communicating expectations, setting goals, rewarding performance, and making sure policies are followed. Kathleen Carney, CEO, Skin Blends, LLC
