I've always had a passion for skin care. You could have called me a product junkie. I was working as an activities director for a health club and I oversaw the small spa there. I realized there was a high demand for qualified estheticians in the area. It was during that time I realized I loved working in a spa, but I didn't want to manage. I wanted to be in the treatment room where I could make a real difference. And here I am, almost 20 years later, with my own spa. I feel blessed and grateful that I have found a career I completely love. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN YOUR OWN SPA? After almost 10 years in a corporate spa, I felt my freedom and creativity were not being utilized to their full extent. For me to make a real difference, I knew I had to be the one setting the standards high to provide an experience beyond clients' expectations. I love the gratification of owning a business where people leave feeling happier, healthier, and with more confidence. HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT IN THIS EVER-CHANGING PROFESSION? I feel it is imperative to keep up with what's going on. I am constantly seeking out the latest treatments and procedures. My passion for skin care drives me to continue to attend trade shows, take classes, and increase my product knowledge. The biggest attribute to my success is investing in myself and surrounding myself with fellow estheticians who own their own salons as well. I have also been involved in Lori Crete's coaching program, The Esthetician Mentor, for several years. This has helped me grow my business to a level I never would have imagined. WHAT CURRENT TREND WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE DISAPPEAR? I would love to see all the crazy do-it- yourself techniques clients find online disappear. I've had so many clients try to self-diagnose their skin and use a home-remedy approach, and they end up throwing their pH off balance, which could potentially lead to conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea.
