Dermaplaning, also known as epidermal leveling, is considered a form of mechanical exfoliation in which the skin's surface is gently shaved to remove the stratum corneum, with the added benefit of vellus hair removal. Performing dermaplaning requires training and practice. While the procedure itself seems simple, the technique requires a steady hand, slow concise movements, and the correct tool. Dermaplaning blades should be used with a scalpel handle; the most commonly used is referred to as a #10 butterfly blade. These blades are intended specifically for dermaplaning. Many distributors who sell these blades also sell other products to the esthetics market, so having an account through a doctor's office is not required.
