ascp and you: finer points Creating A Part-Time Practice by Susanne Schmaling One great thing about a career in esthetics is the chance for flexibility. Many estheticians have a blended career and only operate a room part time. Sometimes this is a necessity, especially when first starting out or moving to a new area. Other times, it is a choice. The same issues remain for every esthetician who chooses a dual career path. Self-Assessment When considering a part-time practice and how you will blend it with another career, the first place to start is a self-assessment. Here are some good questions to ask yourself: 1. What services do I enjoy the most? This doesn't mean the services you are most competent at, but the ones you could happily do all day. If you hate waxing, building a practice around waxing is not going to work for long. 2. What niche of esthetics is attractive to me? With a part-time career, you cannot be a master of all modalities. Remember, you will be competing with full-time estheticians who are focused on building their business. Pick your niche and excel at that. 3. How many hours can I realistically put into my business? This must include the time you spend on nontreatment tasks such as business administration, cleaning, marketing, and so on, not just the number of client hours per week that you can schedule. If you can only do 20 hours a week, start making a business plan based on that number. Esthetician Office Worker
