ascp and you: news notes Christine Valmy, a pioneer of skin care and a longtime icon of the profession, passed away in Bucharest, Romania, on January 18, 2015. She was 88. Valmy was a leader in skin care since 1944. After moving to New York from her native Romania, she opened the first professional skin care school in the United States in 1965 and founded the American Aesthetician Association in 1966. As president of CIDESCO USA from 1967 to 1986, Valmy organized the CIDESCO World Congresses held in New York in 1972 and 1980. Her lasting impact on professional esthetics included the development of state licensing, when she led the way for New York to become the first state to license estheticians in 1994. The Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics & Cosmetology now has locations in 18 countries. Valmy was honored throughout her long career both within the esthetics profession and in the broader world of education, serving on the United States National Council on Vocational Education from 1985 to 1991 and receiving awards and recognition in many countries.
