Have you ever added up all the hours
you've spent in your profession? If you're
like most members of Associated Skin Care
Professionals (ASCP), your typical work
week includes 10–20 hours of hands-on
client sessions. Of course, that doesn't
include all the time you spend on handling
day-to-day tasks, learning new skills, or
running a business.
Back in 2008, in his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell
popularized the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of
deliberate practice to reach world-class standard in any fi eld of study. For
someone who averages 20 hours a week, that works out to a little more
than nine and a half years.
This "10,000-hour rule" has been questioned, however—especially
when it comes to professional achievement. The Click Moment, by Frans
Johansson, is another interesting book on the topic of how luck, skill,
and practice combine to create success. Johansson argues that in an
unpredictable fi eld without a set of obvious rules, success has more to do
with your ability to make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
Here's one such opportunity—and it's free: ASCP's continuing
education. From our premium Skinpro Education online classes to the
65-plus hours of webinars in our archive, you can learn something new
today by logging in at www.ascpskincare.com.
This year in ASCP Skin Deep, we'll help you create success with a
new Q&A column from Dr. Mark Lees that takes you beyond the basics
of skin care knowledge, and a six-column series from ASCP Director of
Education Susanne Schmaling to build six essential skills.
Regardless of how you defi ne success—or whether you believe the
biggest factor is hard work, natural talent, or opportunity—it makes
sense to plan the effort you put in. Every expert agrees deliberate, focused
effort brings better results. We're always here with new ways for you to
learn, whether you have one hour or 10,000 hours to spend.
