Last issue, we asked how you decorate your treatment room. We got so many great photos in response that we decided to give them a little more space—check them out in the feature article starting on page 22. For this issue, we asked an additional question to readers on Facebook: What made you decide to become an esthetician? What Was Your Inspiration? ascp and you: your turn I wanted a more creative career, and to share the confidence with other PCOS women [polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that often causes increased hair growth] that I found after I learned how to wax. Tina Marie Morlock I got laid off from my desk job after six years, and decided to use my severance to go to school to do something to make myself and others happy. It has not always been easy, but I love continuing my education and challenging myself. Dena Diffenbaugh Yankosky I was very unhappy with the work I was doing, so, after much thought, I changed my whole life and went back to school. I had problematic skin and I never forgot the way it made me feel so self-conscious. It affected my work, my self-esteem, my interactions with others—I had trouble looking people in the eye. When I discovered a regimen that worked, I became fascinated by skin care ingredients, and wanted to study the relationship between ingredients and the skin's behavior. I also wanted to help people feel better about themselves. Sara Rowen I wanted a career doing something I loved, rather than dreading going to work every day to sit in an office counting down the minutes to leave. I love what I do and who I work with. I am my own boss, and a business owner, which is something I never imagined happening! Kassandra Sargent I was bullied in school because of arm hair and promised myself I would make women feel beautiful, regardless of what they have going on. I got my esthetics license at 22, opened up my business at 23 after working at a medi-spa, and now, at 26, I have a very successful business with an amazing following! I love my clients and I love my career! Noura Obeidi I wanted to be a makeup artist, but we started with skin in school and I fell in love with it. Ten years later, I run my own skin center and make more $$ than my entire family. I love it! Rebecca Fenaughty Acne destroyed my self-esteem as a child, an adolescent, and a teenager. I never want anyone to feel as helpless as I did. Jessica Oprinovich I wanted to be a makeup artist for film and theatre, then discovered I loved waxing and skin care even more. Sarah Gibson McDaniel Answer our next question: What's the most recent continuing education class you took? Would you recommend it to others and, if so, why? Email your answer to editor@ascpskincare.com. Answers will appear in the January/February 2015 issue and may be edited for length and clarity. 48 ASCP Skin Deep November/December 2014
