What are three things that help you cope with a challenging day at work? Turning Frowns Upside Down ascp and you: your turn I take a deep breath and recite my mantra to myself: "Life is fun—if it's not, then I'm doing it wrong." After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, I made a lot of changes in my life, including my work life. I have simplified my life at work, but there are still some hiccups every now and again. When that happens, I take a moment and look at my favorite picture of my dad (who passed a little over a year ago) and remember all the supportive words and encouragement he gave me, along with a few jokes he told me, and I just smile. Nothing can rattle me after a moment with Dad! "Miss D" SAN RAMON, CALIFORNIA 1. Step away! Take just five minutes between clients to step outside—regroup, regenerate, and refocus. Don't use these five minutes to dwell on the last client or fret about the next client. Just be. 2. Attitudes are contagious, so I try to surround myself with good ones. If no positive people can be found, I find them on social media where I have the power to filter out negative content. 3. I've found if I keep active in my personal life, work doesn't seem like the center of the universe and cause an excessive amount of stress. A healthy work-life balance is my preventative medicine for stress. Ali Davidson DENVER, COLORADO 1. Appropriate verses from the book of Psalms help give me strength. 2. Pictures of my grandchildren remind me how fortunate I am. 3. If I get a bad energy client, I reflect on all the good energy clients, and remind myself that I'm doing a good job. It isn't my fault if some people bring in negativity. Don't give unkind people the power to bring you down! Rachel Glyn CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY My loyal clients, skin care books, and Facebook groups for estheticians! It amazes me how much support the estheticians in the groups give one another. We learn so much from each other and support all the other "esties" we have never met before! It's truly amazing how it can bring your self-esteem and confidence back up. Kaitlyn Smith VIA FACEBOOK Meditation. Audiobooks by Wayne Dyer. Doing something FUN! Michelle Duncan VIA TWITTER 1. I have a super-cute picture of my dog on my computer screen saver. Whenever I'm feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, I go to my computer and look at her picture. It makes me laugh and suddenly things don't feel so overwhelming. 2. I truly believe that what you think and talk about is what you get. Just knowing this keeps me focused on the positive. 3. Gratitude. Even when I'm challenged, I do my best to feel gratitude for the good things. I'm not saying it is always easy, but it does help you feel better! Shelley Hancock LAGUNA NIGUEL, CALIFORNIA Answer our next question: How have you decorated your treatment room (or how would you like to decorate it)? Tell us about your favorite items of décor, or send a picture to show off your room! Email your answer to editor@ascpskincare.com. Answers will appear in the November/December issue and may be edited for length and clarity. 48 ASCP Skin Deep September/October 2014
