CIDESCO Offers New Diplomas ascp and you: news notes Nominations Open for 2014 Gerson Award FDA Cracks Down on Tanning Devices A long-proposed change to federal regulations for sun lamps and tanning beds goes into effect in September 2014. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now considers these to be Class II devices, meaning new models must be reviewed and approved by the FDA for safety before manufacturers can put them on the market. Ultraviolet tanning devices were previously in Class I and did not require any special control or review process. Prominent warning labels notifying users of the link between tanning devices and skin cancer will also be required on sun lamps and tanning beds. Study Compares LED and Laser Therapy A study published in March 2014 in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, reports that LED therapy is as effective as laser therapy for improving the rate of wound healing. The study was conducted by Ryan Spitler and Michael Berns, of the Irvine and San Diego campuses of the University of California. Human and animal cell cultures were scratched and then treated with laser light at 652 and 806 nanometer (nm) wavelengths, and with LED light at 637 and 901 nm. Both types of light therapy significantly improved the rate of healing and the rate of cell migration to the wound in all the samples, compared to those that were left to heal on their own.
