Create your free business website! www.ascpskincare.com 31 Activate your knowledge for real results BY JOHN HILL AND DAVE WAGGONER There is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to skin care. The world is full of ads and websites that tout the advantages of one ingredient or use scare tactics about the dangers of another. Clients can become overwhelmed, and it is up to you to set the record straight. Having a good understanding of ingredients will give you a competitive advantage and help you serve your clients better. Matching Products to Skin Care Goals During your intake process, your initial discussion should be focused on defining the goals for your treatments, based on the client's wishes and current skin condition. In addition to gathering relevant health information, get some idea of the client's lifestyle: eating habits, exercise regimen, hobbies, sleep schedule, water intake, and the type of work she does. Don't forget to ask what skin care products and topical medications she currently uses. Once the treatment goals are defined, identify which of the products available to you have ingredients that will achieve those goals. For example, a client with pigmentation problems will need to use products with skin- brightening agents, melanin inhibitors, and sunscreen to protect the skin from forming new areas of pigmentation. No matter what skin care line you use, stay focused on your ingredient knowledge when choosing a product. Ingredients that are inappropriate for the client's goals will be ineffective at best, and can even make the skin worse, no matter how good they are for another purpose. Create a checklist that makes it easy to see all your products arranged into functional categories. Some good categories to start with are cleanse, brighten, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect. Add more categories based on the focus of your practice and your clients' typical goals.
