ascp and you: your turn Extractions What do you prefer: an extractor, fingers, Q-tips, or another type of tool? I begin with fingers (clean, gloved hands, padded with cotton for client comfort) and only use tools if needed. Kathryn Barrel OWOSSo, Michigan I use Q-tips. They work well, and they're clean. Melisa Palmorn Daytona Beach, Florida I learned the Q-tip technique from Mark Lees more than 16 years ago. It's a gentle way to extract without leaving marks on the skin. It's a rare occasion that I have to use an extractor tool. Debbie Safra Maitland, Florida I've always used my fingers and haven't been a fan of extracting tools, but I just bought the BT Micro ultrasonic spatula and I love it. It's easy to use, it's small, and it has worked wonders. Tiffany Montalbano San Mateo, California I personally enjoy using the finger extraction technique at the moment. Sheila Baydo Tacoma, Washington I just don't see how people get out blackheads with their fingers, especially when there are a lot of them. I use the Round End Extractor from Cosmopro—size 00 or sometimes size 0. It gives me the leverage to get out even the deepest blackheads. Laura Cooksey San Leandro, California I use the BT Micro on the negative ion setting for extractions. Willie Aklin Washington, D.C. I use fingers. I find that I have more control, and there is less chance of damaging the skin because I can gauge pressure better. Augusta Sweet via Facebook I love my DermaSound for extractions. Jeri Cash via Facebook I always start with my hands first and see how it goes. But I have to admit that I am not a wizard at extractions, so I often end up using a comedone extractor. They are not my first choice since they are uncomfortable for the client and, if you use too much pressure, they can easily damage the skin. Cindy Greenwood Perkasie, Pennsylvania Answer our next question: If you could work anywhere, what would your perfect booth, spa, or skin care clinic look like? Email your answer to editor@ascpskincare.com. Answers will appear in the November/ December issue and may be edited for length and clarity. 40ASCP Skin Deep September/October 2013
