The Relaxation Zone Preparing your clients to de-stress by Lynn Parentini Unplugging is an art. For many people these days, it's not an easy one to master. According to the National Institutes of Health, stress is a growing problem, both the everyday variety and its more serious counterpart, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Why are we so stressed these days? Some experts have postulated that it may be the result of constant digital connection to our families, our jobs, and our world. Others believe it is because of the deterioration of face-to-face human contact. It may be a combination of many things, but whatever the reason, it's likely that many of your clients are suffering from stress and its spinoff problems such as anxiety and depression. Spa professionals are uniquely positioned to help clients de-stress through the power of touch and the spa environment. Assume that every client who walks through your door is overstressed and in need of relaxation. Consider yourself a guide and your place of business an oasis of tranquility—an escape zone where the noise of life falls away. Very little effort is required to create this atmosphere for your clients: in fact, simple things will have the most profound effect. 12ASCP Skin Deep September/October 2013
