In September 2021, in the midst of her challenges—and in the throes of COVID-19—King opened Body by Queen Skincare in Palm Springs, California. She started her skin care mission to help acne sufferers, but evolved her practice to include oncology esthetics to help clients like herself, whose skin was compromised by chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. Q. When did you realize you had a love for beauty and makeup? A. My love for makeup and skin care started very young. At elementary school age, I remember my mother giving me her empty makeup containers to play with. I'd pretend to "powder my nose"—a common phrase I heard growing up. Around age 11, my skin started to show signs of early acne. This began the journey to find a "cure" for my troubled skin. I read lots of beauty magazine articles and "teen girl" books about what to do, but looking back, the information wasn't that great—harsh apricot scrubs and alcohol-based treatments were pretty common back then. In high school, I began visiting dermatologists to find a solution. I was prescribed antibiotics, medicated creams (Retin-A), and cleansers. The effects of those treatments left my skin oversensitized, which led to increased oil production, more acne, and hyperpigmentation. Through my high school and college years, I learned that doctors often provide medication without education. Q. What prompted you to formulate your own treatments? A. After college, I began my quest to heal my skin. I was so over the harsh medications . . . and side effects. When I set out to create my products, I focused on all-natural ingredients, as I believe God has provided everything needed for healing our bodies in the environment around us. I wanted to get closer to what was made available to us. I began to study essential oils as medicine—what they were and how they affected the various systems of the body. I also studied which tree and nut oils and butters (olive, almond, cocoa, shea, jojoba) penetrated the skin and provided the healing properties of moisture, protein, and sun protection. At that point, I became a kitchen beautician! Mixing and whipping up formulations at home was the beginning of Body by Queen. I created whipped butters, creams, and oils treated PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY JACOB PHOTOGRAPHY
