56 ASCP Skin Deep May/June 2021 DURING THE TREATMENT For the first treatment, focus on cleansing and some exfoliation. As you go through the steps of the treatment, briefly explain what you are doing. Your client doesn't need to learn how the galvanic machine works, so keep it brief, but also emphasize this is the beginning. After they have a few treatments, you will want to do a series of alpha peels. However, before that, we have to get the client's skin in the best shape before beginning the next phase of treatments. If you are using a product during the treatment that is similar to what your client will be using at home, tell them so they know they will be carrying the baton until their next visit. At the end of the first treatment, have them feel their skin. Most clients are amazed at the feeling of an effective treatment. During your client's mask rest, put together their home-care program. Don't bring out 19 products! Keep it as simple as possible, and write down step-by-step instructions. Just do the basics: cleanser, toner, sunscreen moisturizer, AHA/BHA, night hydration, and an eye cream. (You can add more specific products, such as serums and peptides, later.) Creating a "beginner's" or "starter's" kit is ideal. The kit concept tells the client you have developed a basic program just for them without a bunch of individual "optional" products. AFTER THE TREATMENT Leave enough time at the end of the appointment to go over the steps of the home-care program you've developed and written down. Many new clients are not familiar with the steps of good home care. Emphasize you are counting on their twice-a-day participation. Tell them to think of you as their "skin care trainer," and they have to do the "workout" between sessions. After showing your client their products for home care, ask if they have questions. (Most don't. They just want to get started.) After the home-care discussion, you'll want to approach the idea of starting a series of biweekly treatments with your client. Explain your long-range ideas for their program, which may include peels, microcurrent, LED, etc., and as After carefully examining your client's skin, tell them what you think. It's important to be honest. If the client has a lot of sun damage, you need to point that out. They need to understand their attention and habits will influence their success.
