It's no secret that skin changes gradually, and it will typically need more than one treatment for client satisfaction. So, why not start educating clients from the beginning? While commenting on their skin, plant the seed for future treatments and supporting home care. Let's take a moment to revisit and appreciate the standard protocol for a good skin analysis: 1. Follow all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidelines, as well as all personal protection equipment requirements. 2. Cleanse the skin using a gentle cleanser. 3. Use your magnifying lamp. (Remember to protect your client's eyes with damp cotton pads.) 4. Thoroughly and methodically analyze the skin. As you begin, it's best to develop a pattern for analyzing the skin. Start in the upper right quadrant of your client's forehead, and then move your eyes to the left across the client's forehead, noticing any redness, dry skin, patchy areas around the eyebrows, or pigmentation. As your eyes move downward to the left outer-eye area, note any condition in that area. Then, your eyes will move to the left cheek area. Note any redness or telangiectasia. Continue your analysis of the face by slowly and methodically moving your gaze from left to right. As you communicate with your client, it is important to be positive about their skin and their skin care goals. As we all know, we can be our own worst enemy when it comes to judging our bodies. Strive to educate your client to their end goal. Link their skin conditions to the ingredients that will address their skin condition. Brie y review product use and the bene ts of continued and consistent usage. This is the time to set client expectations on a variety of topics. SIMPLE, YET CRITICAL Skin analysis is deceptively simple, yet so critical— and it's your chance to shine. Professional skin analysis a ords the esthetician a place and space to educate the client and answer questions or concerns, as well as plant the seed of future appointments. Don't let time slip away from you during the skin analysis. Skin analysis is that brief moment during the professional facial where time stands still. Aim to complete the analysis in 3–4 minutes. It may be brief, but it's time well spent, as proper skin analysis will bring your retail products into focus for your clients, and your bottom line will thank you!
