28 the student edition Google them. Start with an internet search to get a company overview. Do they have a website? Have they been in the news—and is the news good? What about reviews? Yelp is a great place to start. Also, check Glassdoor for more information, such as potential salaries, job descriptions, company and employee reviews, details about the hiring process, etc. Follow them online. Get a clearer picture of a business by signing up for their newsletter and/or blog, if available. Also, check out—and follow—all of their social media accounts. How does the company present themselves online? Is their online presence in line with your values? Ask around. Do you know anyone who has worked at the salon you're interested in? Do you know any of their clients? Getting firsthand information from others is beneficial in deciding if a certain work environment is a good match for you. Check the competition. Which companies are in the same arena as the company you are researching? What are the similarities? Differences? Pinpoint something unique about each of the companies you're interested in—something that sets them apart. What makes the potential employer a better fit for you? Making specific comparisons will, again, offer a clearer picture of your employment goals and aspirations. Tip: If you know who will be conducting the interview, do a LinkedIn and social media search (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to get to "know" them. Facebook profiles and tweets (on Twitter) will give you an excellent idea of the interviewer's "vibe" and an indication of what they consider to be important. STEP 4 : DRAFT A CHEAT SHEET Now that you know what your dream job looks like and your employer research is complete, your next step is to draft questions for the interviewer—questions to "fill in the blanks" that were left by your research. Focus your questions on areas that are of genuine interest to you—not just questions you think the employer wants you to ask.
