SCOPE OF PRACTICE Like all advanced esthetic procedures, each state has its own rules and regulations as to whether an esthetician can perform ultrasound skin tightening. Check with your state board to determine whether this treatment is within your state's scope of practice. In most states, the use of focused ultrasound is unclear and may require medical director oversight. In states where master estheticians are licensed, such as Washington, Oregon, and Utah, ultrasound can only be performed by these master estheticians. 7 Ultherapy is currently the only FDA-approved device for ultrasound skin tightening, which can be used for lifting, toning, and improving lines and wrinkles, 8 and the manufacturer provides onsite training in the use of its machines. Alternatively, local advanced esthetic schools may also provide training in ultrasound coupled with other advanced esthetic procedures. Notes 1.
