48 ascp skin deep september/october 2020 ADVANCED SKIN ANALYSIS Advancements in technology have made advanced skin analysis faster, cheaper, and more reliable than ever before. More detailed than visual inspection or using a Woods lamp, today's skin analysis devices provide personalized measurement of key indicators of skin condition. Most measure a minimum of hydration, texture, oiliness, redness, and hyperpigmentation. More advanced models can analyze pore size, percentage of porphyrins, and lash length. From simple moisture meters as seen in big-box cosmetics counters to advanced systems that provide 3D full-face analysis, the common denominator is a personalized and individualized skin analysis. Most systems involve a camera, either handheld or fixed, that produces a detailed report that compares the results to similar age and gender groups. The result is a graph, chart, or a series of images that detail the comparisons. The tool provides an unbiased snapshot of the individual that can be used to map out treatments, provide targeted product recommendations, and document progress. The cost of skin care analysis devices has become affordable for solo skin care professionals, as well as spas and studios. They are relatively easy to use and provide the client with details not possible with a visual inspection and guest history. What to Ask 1. How large is the sample group of clients each photo is compared to? 2. What are the warranty terms? How much is the annual service contract (if required)? 3. How frequently are the comparison group statistics updated? 4. Can the software be customized to provide product recommendations, including your private label or preferred products? 5. Is the device portable? Cost A good handheld moisture meter will run about $20–$25; top-of-the-line imaging systems are $30,000 and up. Many excellent systems suitable for esthetician use are in the $5,000–$7,000 range. From simple moisture meters as seen in big-box cosmetics counters to advanced systems that provide 3D full-face analysis, the common denominator is a personalized and individualized skin analysis.
