find your dream career! ascpskincare.com/career-toolkits 49 Color Up Q: What was the genesis of Color Up? A: The Color Up concept began when Bryce Conley, Will Parker, and I met through the cannabis industry in 2013, but it wasn't until February 2015 that we registered our business. At the time, it seemed like everyone in Colorado knew how to use cannabis recreationally, and many were using it medicinally, but our families and friends on the East Coast and the Midwest had so many questions. Though we'd been working with the cannabis plant for many years, and I spent over a decade in the pharmaceutical industry studying dermatology and internal medicine, we still wanted to be sure we were educated from every angle before off ering them answers. We began attending medical cannabis conferences, frequented trade shows, Will and I went back to school, and eventually we were able to meet their concerns with valuable information. This research instilled an even deeper desire to educate the community, so that's exactly what we did. Q: Why did Color Up decide to specialize in CBD-based products? A: Shortly after we created our business, our bulldog Kali had a series of illnesses leading up to a cancer diagnosis. After meeting with several oncology specialists and hitting dead ends, we made the decision to treat her with cannabis. We utilized both marijuana and hemp during her treatment and noticed a profound diff erence both with the isolated CBD and with the full plant extracts. The products available on the market at the time were not up to our standards, so we grew our own plants and made her medicine ourselves. Through this process we saw the need for cleaner, more eff ective CBD products to go along with the education we were providing, so we began creating diff erent topical and internal formulations for humans as well. Q: What should estheticians know about your products? A: Our products are unique in that they go through a three- step process before they reach the market. First, every ingredient is thoroughly studied and approved by our biologist for biocompatibility and availability within the body. Second, FOLLOW THE LEADERS ascp skin deep special advertising section each ingredient is looked over by our chemists to ensure quality and stability before the products are formulated. Third, the formulations get put into the hands of all Color Up's professionals and students for feedback and anecdotal evidence. Everything is created and produced in our own certifi ed lab at the Color Up Wellness Center. Our professional line is also oncology approved by Oncology Spa Solutions and each formulation is clean enough to use on clients with compromised immune systems. Q: What kind of training do you o er estheticians? A: We currently off er an extensive online Master Program for the professional that has nine core classes with additional workshops added each month. We host hands-on classes at our Wellness Center in Denver, travel to diff erent spas and schools across the country to off er in-house education, and we have an education team across the country that is available to customize training to your services and business model. We have created diff erent levels of education tailored to each step of the process, from student education to advanced training classes for seasoned professionals. Q: What are the characteristics of an effective leader? A: It's important for anyone who is going to lead others to understand they must also be willing to follow. We won't always be the one with the solution, so knowing when it's time to let someone else lead is crucial. Allowing for this fl ow helps team members develop their own skills and strengths, rather than relying on the leadership team for every decision. Eff ective leaders are also well versed in proper communication and they use this skill often. An open stream of communication allows everyone to feel heard, understood, and supported. Eff ective leaders should also be fl exible, agile, and creative problem solvers who are able to see a situation that is no longer working and adjust accordingly. sponsored by The Color Up Team: Bryce Conley, cofounder and CEO; Shauna Blanch, LMT, cofounder and COO; Will Parker, cofounder and CRDO
