36 ascp skin deep may/june 2020 CONTRAINDICATIONS Ombre powder brows should only be performed on clients who are in good health. As with all pigment procedures, applying ombre powder brows creates a wound, and clients with diseases and disorders that prevent them from healing properly are contraindicated. Some of those conditions include any illness, medication, or treatment that compromises the immune system, as well as bleeding disorders and uncontrolled diabetes. Additionally, clients on blood thinners, acne medication (like Accutane), or who use antiaging products (like retinol) should proceed with caution. This list is not all-inclusive, and performing a thorough consultation, complete with a signed informed consent, is necessary—even if the client appears to be in good health. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Although some brow artists do not view ombre powder brows as a permanent makeup procedure, most regulating agencies will classify it as such. So, in order to become a permanent makeup artist, you will want to check with your state board. Some states will request you speak to the health department or other licensing body, since an esthetic or cosmetology license may not be required to perform this procedure in your state. Training requirements vary widely, from very minimal training to as many as 300 hours or more. Additionally, your state may require a separate license or an apprenticeship. Whether or not your state requires you to have an additional license, you should still invest your time and money to properly advance your training. Always choose a reputable and accredited program. The Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) and the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM) are two associations that provide support and resources to permanent makeup artists, including education resources.
