Moving into my 32nd year in the esthetic industry, here's what I know for sure: To create and sustain a successful skin care business, we need to stay up with the ever-growing esthetic equipment technology. Today's clients are savvy and results oriented. There's so much information readily available to them. They're investigating technologies on the Internet, and they need to know that we're keeping up on it as well. No longer are they satisfied with an old-fashioned steam facial. Fortunately for us, we do have the equipment available to achieve the kind of results they're looking for. That's why I find this industry just as exciting today as I did when I started in 1987. I've followed the ever-changing technologies throughout the years, testing just about every new modality that has come along. I can remember when you were considered high tech if you had aromatherapy in your steamer! Today we can truly offer our clients result-oriented treatments with cutting edge equipment. Another thing I know for sure after these many years in the industry is that doing a 90-minute relaxing facial isn't going to fill your piggy bank, and it isn't going to keep clients loyal to you. Also, this type of facial is not easy on your body. Always think long- term when deciding what type of treatments you want to offer at your spa. When a client gets up from a long, relaxing facial, they may say, "Thank you so much, I feel fabulous," and perhaps book their next appointment. But, no offense, they're probably not going out and spreading the word about you. When you offer your clients treatments that achieve immediate results, they don't even have to tell their friends. Their friends will see those results and want to know what they've been up to! Now you've got loyal lifetime clients and instant referrals. This is a fabulous industry we've all chosen to be a part of. Keep yourself educated and you will prosper. But most important, show in your actions and with your words just how much you enjoy your work. People will be drawn to your positive energy!
