ascp and you: your turn Children in the Spa Have you ever had children tag along unexpectedly with their parents on a spa visit? How do you handle it? I only have one client who needs to bring in her little one. I try to book her at times I know the other therapists are not working. If it doesn't work out and another therapist is there, my client is very good at keeping the child's "inside voice" very low. Diane Ahern San Ramon, California I have had three clients bring their babies. Two of the babies were close to newborn and one was older. I have also had a mother bring a child when she came in for a facial and spray tan. The daughter sat in the room while I gave the facial. This was really awkward for me, but I dealt with it. I don't have a problem with kids, as long as the parents are OK with it and the children are well-behaved. Sheila Gordon Palm Harbor, Florida I say, "Sorry, our insurance doesn't allow for children in the spa, for the safety and consideration of other spa guests. When is your child care available so we can reschedule your appointment?" I had a woman bring her kids. After that experience, if anyone even breathes a hint that they may ask, I go with "My insurance won't allow it." I say "no kids" on the first page of my website, in a nice way. Sheryl O'Donoghue Baba Brockton, Massachusetts Julia Avery Moore, Oklahoma I am the owner of a spa with one treatment room and a waiting area. Recently, a new mom came in for a bikini wax. She had to bring her infant son because she was unable to get child care. Since I have a "by appointment" establishment, I was more than happy to accommodate her. She was very relieved and grateful. I offer in-home postnatal facial treatments for new moms, so kids are just part of the deal. Bessie Poulos Ktistakis Locust Valley, New York We have a client who brings her child in at least once a month, and the front desk staff watches the child. I had a client try to hold a baby on her lap while I waxed her. I told her I couldn't wax her with the child jumping on her, that I may take off a brow, and that the child should not be near hot wax. Liability! Kim Berlee Via Facebook Jenny Hart Via Facebook No kids under 12 years old, unless the client brings someone who can take care of them. Khatija Hudda Atlanta, Georgia My client brings her 8-year-old son. He stays seated in a chair while I wax her eyebrows, but sits in the reception area outside when we do bikini waxing. Clients know if their children can't behave, they are not to bring them. They should respect our business. At the same time, I understand that our license doesn't cover day care. Alicia Moore Via Facebook Answer our next question: What was your most memorable experience with a client? Good, bad, funny, scary, or inspiring—anything goes. Email your answer to editor@ascpskincare.com. Answers will appear in the May/June issue and may be edited for length and clarity. 40ASCP Skin Deep March/April 2013
