ascp and you: member news News for ASCP Members Spa Trends for 2013 SpaFinder Wellness's 10th annual Trends Report was released in January. The forecast is based on surveys of spa and wellness businesses, travel agents, and consumers around the world. Here are some of its predictions for popular spa offerings in 2013. See more at www.spafinder.com. The Mindfulness Massage Mindfulness massage combines bodywork with breath work and techniques such as body scans, in which the client's attention is brought to focus on parts of the body by the action of the therapist's hands. Earthing This is a movement promoting direct contact with the earth, walking barefoot, etc., based on the premise that grounding the body can improve health. While formal earthing sessions are expected to increase, a broader trend will be spas integrating real-world physical contact with nature, instead of artificial methods like nature-themed background music. Spa-Genomics The medical profession is entering a new era in which predictive, personalized testing and treatments are possible, using information mined from each person's own genetic code. The spa industry will also benefit from these developments. Ayurveda and Other Ancient Revivals Expect an increased number of authentic global experiences at spas: India's ayurveda treatments, Turkish and Roman baths, and traditional Russian banyas. Color Self-Expression Self-transformation will be painted on in 2013, including in-your-face shades, reverse ombré, neon lashes, body art, and tattoo spas. Nail art will be less flashy, moving to more nuanced textures and designs. Inclusive Wellness With more than 1 billion disabled people worldwide and an aging population, the industry will shift focus to deliver wellness to persons of all ages and ability levels. Men: From Barbers to "Brotox" More men are having cosmetic surgery, and this increased demand will have a spinoff effect for spas. Men desire subtle results. Look for more spas to build additional comprehensive, male-focused service menus.
