80 ascp skin deep march/april 2019 ASCP & you I AM ASCP HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH SKIN CARE? As far back as I can remember, I was doing my mom's, cousins', grandma's, aunts', and friends' hair, makeup, and nails. As I got older, my passion became clearer and clearer. I can honestly say that I never even considered another career path! I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. It's everchanging and always growing. It's never dull and always diff erent. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SPECIALIZE IN WAXING? After being a hairstylist for several years—which I loved—I wanted to do something diff erent. I had colleagues from school who suggested waxing, so I gave it a shot. Waxing allows me to work with a variety of diff erent people every single day. I have lots of happy customers, and it is fast paced, which I love. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING AN ESTHETICIAN? Hands down, it's making people look and feel beautiful, and teaching simple ways and tricks to enhance the natural attributes we're given. I couldn't ask for more than happy customers who feel good in their skin! Seeing people leave with a more confi dent, happy smile because of something simple I was part of will always be one of the things I appreciate most. WHITNEY WAGNER Esthetician; owner, Bliss Body Waxing, Denver, CO ASCP Member Since 2018 WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING A SOLO BUSINESS? Having my own business has allowed me fl exibility. I have a 9-year-old daughter, and being able to be there to do things going on with her schedule is a huge plus. It's also nice to be able to go on a vacation with my family or take a day off to go golfi ng with a girlfriend. That being said, when I am not working, I am not making income—and that's something that still takes getting used to. Starting your own business takes time. You are only going to get out of it what you are willing to put in it. I love walking into my one- person salon and knowing what to expect. I love that my clients also know that their expectations will be met when they walk in. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START A SOLO BUSINESS? Opening my salon was the best decision I could have made! It has opened doors for me and my career that I didn't know were possible. I encourage others to do the same: go for it! Make a plan, gather your resources, and challenge yourself. Your only competition is you. You can be as busy and as successful as you want to be. One of my favorite quotes is "The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit." Consistency and patience are most important. Waxing Wonder This solo practitioner proves that esties can be successful with one specialty
